On the occasion of the International Day of Families, we are pleased to present a global cultural initiative: “WE, HOME”, a photo exhibition accessible online at www.we-home.it. The exhibition was conceived and curated by CISF - the International Centre for Family Studies (Milan, Italy), with the aim of exploring expressions of care and interpersonal relationships within the domestic sphere.
The title “WE, HOME” evokes the notion of collective identity (“we”) and simultaneously explores the dual meaning of “home” as both a physical space and a verb, a place that welcomes, hosts, and nurtures.
Initially launched in Italy as a travelling panel exhibition showcased in over twenty venues, the exhibition offers a visual and narrative journey into the everyday life of families, portrayed in their private living environments. It presents an intimate and authentic perspective in which acts of caregiving and affection are placed at the heart of daily family life. Ten families from different Italian cities were selected, each residing in different domestic settings (apartments, suburban homes, rural dwellings, and countryside houses...). These families represent a varied array of domestic realities: young couples building their future, elderly individuals cared for by adult children, large and welcoming households, small and newly-formed family units, intergenerational arrangements, single-parent families, Italian families, and those with mixed or foreign backgrounds.
Beyond the uniqueness of each individual story, presented through brief audio narrations available on the website, the exhibition identifies a common thread through a series of thematic “keywords” that characterise all families: eating, resting, reuniting, welcoming, playing, working, studying, cleaning, listening, comforting, crying, arguing, planning, praying, relaxing, laughing, seeking refuge, hosting, educating, helping, growing...”. There are so many “words of relationship” that are intrinsically linked to families: ten of them constitute the thematic path represented visually throughout the digital gallery.
Please visit www.we-home.it and enter these homes to listen to the stories of the families featured and to discover how the universal language of human connection unites us all!
